A compact, powerful projection module based on micro-LEDs provides for increased safety in the immediate vicinity of a vehicle and reduces the number of accidents involving injuries. The new solution is especially easy to integrate into a vehicle because all of the components - power supply, graphics processing unit and micro-LED module - fit into a cube measuring only five centimeters on a side.

New Ways to measure Driver Cellphone Use could yield better DataRoadside cameras and telematics data could provide a more complete picture of driver cellphone use, two new studies from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety suggest. Observers relying on photographs taken with roadside cameras were almost as good as in-person monitors at identifying drivers who were using their cellphones, one study showed. Another demonstrated that the telematics data collected by the safe-driver apps that are gaining ground in the insurance industry could provide more details about when and how drivers are using their devices.

Rohde & Schwarz introduces the shortest possible Distance Simulation for FMCW RadarsThe radar test system from Rohde & Schwarz simulates driving scenarios for testing radar based ADAS and radar sensors used in automated driving cars entirely over the air. Now Rohde & Schwarz introduces new options for the R&S AREG800A automotive radar echo generator and the R&S QAT100 antenna array. The system is able to generate extremely short distances for the artificial objects, and therefore enables realistic autonomous braking tests with the smallest distance possible on the market.

As a preventive measure, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has developed thermal barriers that help to slow down thermal runaway by increasing resistance to propagation. The new 3D thermal barriers can be used at various positions within the battery and have already proven reliable in their initial series productions.

Education and Driving AutomationResearch conducted by the consortium of the AV-PL-ROAD project, which also included the Motor Transport Institute, showed that raising the awareness and level of knowledge of drivers and candidates for drivers in the use of driving automation systems will ensure proper and safe interaction between a human and a vehicle. Traffic participants, and above all drivers, should know the principles of operation of individual systems (especially those installed in their vehicles) and know when their operation may be disrupted.
