When automated driving becomes a reality, drivers will have flexible seating position options. To provide the best possible protection in the event of a crash, even in comfortable seating positions, new airbag concepts are required that adapt their depth of effect to the respective seating position. ZF LIFETEC has developed a dual contour airbag for the passenger side, which can be inflated in two different sizes, depending on the seating position. ZF LIFETEC is also developing a dual contour airbag for the driver's side for the next generation of partially or fully automated vehicles.

BMW is the first carmaker in the world to receive approval for a combination of a Level 2 driving assistance system (the BMW Highway Assistant) and a Level 3 system in the form of the BMW Personal Pilot L3 in the same vehicle. The new BMW 7 Series therefore sets a milestone in the field of automated driving by offering a unique opportunity to enjoy the benefits of both systems in the same car.

When it comes to vehicle size and shape, it s long been known that SUVs, pickups, and light vans are more likely to kill or seriously injure pedestrians and cyclists when involved in a crash compared with sedans. SUVs have taken over U.S. roads, climbing from 24 % of registered vehicles in 2013 to 36 % in 2023. Recent research from IIHS demonstrates that the height and shape of their front ends is part of what makes them dangerous.
Two IIHS studies investigating the association between passenger vehicle front-end profiles and pedestrian injury severity in motor vehicle crashes will be presented at the PraxisConference Pedestrian Protection on July 3 - 4.

TNO has a lengthy track record of researching motion sickness and is working with industry partners to gain insights into and develop solutions for this issue to benefit the development of self-driving vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration named 13 members to its newly established Motorcyclist Advisory Council, which will advise the Department on key motorcycle safety issues. The announcement comes as motorcyclist deaths are on the rise, even as projections show an eighth consecutive quarterly decline in overall traffic fatalities. NHTSA estimates that motorcycle fatalities increased 2 % in 2023, up from the 6,218 motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2022.

Roadway departure crashes, responsible for approximately one-half of all roadway fatalities, demand more attention. Understanding how traditional guardrail responds to EV impacts is just one crucial component for promoting roadway safety today and in the future.

Hardware and software are partners in a perpetual relay race, with one dependent on the other for that boost of speed that brings innovations to market that were once thought impossible to engineer. A significant breakthrough in accelerating simulations stems from harnessing the immense parallel computing power of graphics processing units (GPUs). With the ability to distribute tasks across thousands of cores simultaneously, GPUs excel in handling complex computations swiftly. Ansys collaborates closely with NVIDIA to leverage this parallelism, continually refining and enhancing GPU-accelerated simulation solvers and algorithms.
