Human body models enable crash test engineers to simulate and analyze the behavior of the human body during a crash or other impact event. By using HBMs, engineers can better understand how different vehicle designs and safety systems will affect the human body, allowing them to make informed decisions when optimizing those systems. This not only saves time and resources compared to traditional testing methods, but also allows for a more detailed and accurate analysis.
This study from the Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey proposes and simulates a smart system that can be used in production car seats to decrease whiplash risk in rear-end crashes. A sliding seat incorporating a semiactively controlled magnetorheological damper model positioned under the seat-pan is simulated with a validated biofidelic human body model. Since this is the first study that demonstrates a computer controlled anti-whiplash car seat system to the best of the authors knowledge, a benchmark analysis is carried out to compare the proposed semiactive seat with a state-of-the-art passive anti-whiplash car seat using 23 different crash pulses, including the moderate and high severity crash pulses within the Euro NCAP whiplash risk assessment framework.
Optimizing communication between vehicle and driver as a function of the degree of automation is the objective of a research project conducted by Fraunhofer in collaboration with other companies. The researchers are combining sensors for monitoring the vehicle interior with language models to form what are known as vision language models. Adaptability is a key capability to ensure the driver's performance, to enhance driver's experience and to improve trust in the autonomous system. It is achieved by integrating various interaction modalities. However, interfaces and interaction may vary depending on driving context like environmental conditions, driver's state, variety of population and other situational factors.
